January 14, 2010 09:57 AM PST
EM DJ Spotlight 013 - COLD BLANK Sorry for the delay in getting a new podcast up. I've been dealing with some personal issues for the last couple months. However, things are finally getting sorted out and I should hopefully be back on track with the podcast from here out. Look for a Best of 2009 mix by yours truly in the coming weeks! This mix by Cold Blank has everything. It's Progressive, Electro, Fidget, Club, Bassline, you name it, it's in here. Enjoy! ---> Aaron L ABOUT COLD BLANK: Cold Blank, (Christopher Gaspar and Manny Luquin), are Californian electro / house producers and DJ's. They first stepped on the scene by distributing several bootleg remixes in late 2008 through myspace, which resulted in having their music featured on countless international blogs. These bootleg remixes have been and continue being played around the world by some of the biggest names in the EDM world. Their first original tracks were instantly signed to several prestigious labels such as Plasmapool, Wearhouse Music, Destination? Records, and Nu Industry Recordings. Nearly every single they've released has charted on the Top 100 Electro House Beatport charts. They have also already launched their own successful Beatport label, Burn The Fire. Cold Blank has performed with many notable artists such as Klaas, Showtek, Miles Dyson, Wolfgang Gartner, DJ Bam Bam, Felguk, Le Castle Vania, Designer Drugs, Swedish Egil, and several more. Their tracks have received support from the likes of David Guetta, Will.I.AM (of Black Eyed Peas), Kaskade, Miles Dyson, Kelevra, Micky Slim, DJ Bam Bam, Stupid Fresh, Lee Mortimer, Kissy Sell Out, Zane Lowe, Stereoheroes, Lazy Rich, Signal Drivers, DJ Kue, Reid Speed, and many more. After debuting back in 1995, Aquasky spent 7 years creating Drum & Bass for many key labels including Moving Shadow, Reinforced & Good Looking. In the late 90's they were hooked on a new sound, a breakbeat sound that reminded them of their old days raving at the free parties. Not content with the breakbeat that was on offer at the time the guys wrote the seminal 'bassline breaks' track titled 777 for Botchit & Scarper. The label, pleased with the success of the single, signed them for an album and in 2002 'Beat The System', the bands 5th album, was released to critical claim. Fusing breakbeatíswith 4/4 rhythms and old school sounds with a healthy dose of d&b basslines the band started a sub-genre of breakbeat that is still going strong today. Over the last few years Aquasky found they had exhausted what they were able to do within the remit of 'breaks', after 5 strong years of pushing the boundaries of all the styles found under that banner and a release schedule un-matched by any other producer within that scene. Reverting back to their 4/4 influences that were rubbed onto them (like Vics Vapour-Rub) from the key Rave & Acid tracks that got them started in the first place, they locked themselves back into the studio and firmly shut the doors for a full 12 months. It is now 2009, 7 years after they made the full-time leap to breakbeat, and the crew are back with another fresh style. Combining bashment rhythms, 4/4 beats, old school vibes, trademark bass and classic breakbeat... yet to be branded but much discussed. I've got a very special treat for you all this week. This is one of my favorite mixes of the year. You'll want the tracklist handy! ABOUT ELECTRIC SOULSIDE: Electric Soulside is Patrick and Steve Hoody. They have since brought their brand of glitch and fidget house to labels across Europe, Canada and now, into The States. Driven by underground dance culture of early 90's, their first project, Mantra and Galax-sea, was a live, synth-driven show that showcased their abilities to musically improvise alongside renowded Belgium musicians. Electronic and heady in nature, the sonic structure of their sets still put house at the forefront, taking influences from artists such as DJ Sneak, Derrick Carter and Paul Johnson. By 2001, the duo's signed on to London's Blue Black Records, wich were home to breaks artists including Meat Katie, Elite force and Dylan Rhymes. Patrick and Steve absorbed the outside influences into their own sound, recording under the names Hoody & Hoody and Ultravision before settling into Electric Soulside in early 2006. Electric Soulside melds breaks, glitch, electro and house into their production, creating sounds that twist and turn whether they are loosely adhering to the structured sounds of house or keeping their own beat to UK breakbeat. Tim Healey is a unique DJ/producer. His sounds are different than just about anything else out there to date. His energetic sets are a mash-up of ghetto-house, electro and quality club-sounds, best summarised by DJ MAG: “Tim Healey blows the speakers apart with his trashed out sound, the music is as cutting edge as it can be”. Tim has partnered up with TAI for this mix and some new tracks, (aka Tai Jason, award-winning and platinum-selling hip-hop producer). Tims label, Giant Pussy Records has recently released GP002: TIM HEALEY & TAI - POCKET ROCKET w/the flipside MASH UP BOYZ // Tes La Rok Remix. Both tracks are HOT, so head over to Beatport and pick them up Tim Healey on Beatport:

EM PODCAST - NOW WITH BETTER SOUND QUALITY! This is the most satisfying 30 minute-ish DJ mix I have ever heard. If you like fidget, bassline, or dubstep and you don't know who AC Slater is I suggest your crawl out from under your bridge and see the light. AC Slater, a former Philadelphia hardcore rave DJ, has found his niche in a more bassy club-oriented sound since 2007. He has had a huge amount of momentum behind him and his very fresh and original sound over the last two years. His label, PARTY LIKE US Records, is quickly becoming a major player in dance floor ready, heavy bass music. Party Like Us has already produced some mega releases from the man himself and other like-minded producers like B. Rich, Udachi, and Rico Tubbs. Look/listen to AC Slater at: https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/artist/detail/52351/AC%20Slater TRACKLIST: 1. Toxic Avenger - “Toxic is Dead” (Drop the Lime Remix)

EM DJ Spotlight 005 Tommy "The Funk Out" McFadden from Liverpool is a big up-and-comer is the fidget-funk genre. His dad bought a full disco when he was 8 years old, and he was learning to DJ by 11! He's quickly putting together a big list of banging production work. I STRONGLY suggest if you haven't heard his funk-tacular bass-funk that you head on over to Beatport and give him a listen (https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/home/detail/1/beatport#app=369d&a486-index=2) Keep an eye on this guy over the next few years... He has had releases on Loudroom Recordings and Jon E-Industry's Nu Industry label, plus many many more. CHECK OUT THE FUNK OUT @ http://www.myspace.com/thefunkout

SPKR Ninjaz bring the bass in an unusual and completely pleasing way. It doesn't get much more filthy. I highly recommend you do some research and get to know these guys if you don't already. SKPR Ninjaz is responsible for one of my favorite current tracks "Nunchux". Their sub-rumbling bass and intricate percussion sounds are sure to take dance floors by storm. Miles Dyson didn’t hesitate to sign these guys to his Plasmapool label as soon as heard their tracks. So keep your eyes and ears open, these guys are about to bust through your SPKRs like no other! Episode 002 of the Enliven Music Podcast's DJ Spotlight has a seriously spectacular mix that Calvertron sent over. I won't even try to explain it. Just listen for yourself. It's fabulous. Alex Calver, aka Calvertron was formerly of the duo Twocker (which nearly made me cry when they split up) is the master of the remix. His productions include everything from club music to progressive to techno to some seriously dirty fidget house releases, plus everything in between. Alex has well over 100 12" vinyl productions under his belt. Since the demise of wax Alex launched a digital label 'Jack Knife Records' which has already seen some great releases from producers such as DJ Bam Bam, Gigi Barocco, Zodiac Cartel, Aniki, Tom EQ, Kyle Watson, Blatta & Inesha, and Bryan Cox. For more info on Calvertron visit his Myspace at http://www.myspace.com/calvertronica [EM DJ Spotlight Ep002 - CALVERTRON] TRACKLIST: 1. Heartache - Satan's Circus Theme
